The Community We Serve
Emmanuel Memorial Episcopal Church is located in the revitalized historic downtown of the city of Champaign, a stone's throw from cafes, restaurants, performance venues, a large city park, and both single-family and multi-unit housing. Champaign-Urbana is a Big 10 university town about 2 hours south of Chicago, and has lots to offer; people describing the environment to others sometimes call it "micro-urban." In August 2019 USA Today ranked us 16th on a national list of "40 places young people are moving." The cost of living here is low, and convenience is high, yet we have many amenities of a larger city.
Emmanuel is part of the Episcopal Diocese of Springfield, and we value our heritage of reverent Book of Common Prayer worship. The liturgical style is Anglo-Catholic, but in the pews piety, politics, and theology cover a wide range.
