At Emmanuel, we know that when we serve other people, we are really serving Jesus Christ. Whether we feed the hungry, visit shut-ins, or join in a special effort with a local social service organization, we live out the faith that God has given us. We also offer financial assistance to individuals when possible, and the generosity of our parishioners' regular giving enables us to make annual donations to organizations whose work is in keeping with our mission.
A few examples of our current ministry opportunities in outreach are listed here. If you are interested in putting your faith to work through one of these programs or learning more, please contact the church office via email or at 217.352.9827.
Once a week, Emmanuel receives a referral from The Empty Tomb, of a local family in need of food. The lay member who delivers the food gathers non-perishables from the church's food pantry and supplements it with fresh food purchased at a local grocery store. Parishioners donate canned goods and dry food for the church pantry or donate money for fresh food supplements. In addition, Emmanuel teams assist with Empty Tomb's annual Mega Work-A-Thon both through donations and manual labor. Emmanuel is currently working on expanding our hands-on involvement with Empty Tomb.
Meals on Wheels
Emmanuel serves the homebound hungry in our geographical parish by staffing MOW routes each summer. Emmanuel members sign up to make the deliveries for this time period.
Sack Lunch Program
Feeding the hungry is something we do year in, year out, because Jesus told us to. Each weekday at 9am, we provide at least two dozen lunches from the Emmanuel office door to those who would otherwise not have any food. These sack lunches are assembled by parishioners (one ministry opportunity) and given out by either staff or parishioners (another opportunity.) We occasionally also offer flu shots or other ministry at the same time.
PACE (Persons Assuming Control of Their Environment)
Emmanuel cares about those differently abled. We assist PACE by collecting pop top tabs for their work. Their mission is to assist and empower people with disabilities so they can remain independent and part of the community.
Youth Group Outreach
We believe that forming young people in service and ministry is important. Emmanuel youth, through hands on ministry and fundraising, support several community projects such as the Crisis Nursery, Toys for Tots and a men's transitional program for the homeless.
