St. Benedict instructed his monks to receive all guests as Christ, “for he will say, 'I was a stranger and you welcomed me'." Emmanuel is a church that loves to get together, host one another, and welcome guests, especially around food. And that's no wonder, because Jesus also called people to the table.
Whether a picnic, a formal reception, small groups grilling out at members' houses, or a gathering at a favorite local spot, we build relationships in Christ and seek to cross the barriers of age, income, and class that the world tries to impose on us. Yearly receptions at Easter and Christmas offer everyone the chance to bring favorite dishes, and after church most Sundays we pull out cafe tables and snacks to spend some casual time together.
The book of Hebrews tells us, "Let brotherly love continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares." Longterm member or new arrival, you can be part of this ministry, either by stepping up for a special event or by taking the very simple step of hosting one coffee hour!
