J. S. Bach has been called "The Fifth Evangelist," and Emmanuel parishioner Mark Dirksen taught an OLLI course this fall on the Cantatas of Bach. Adapting that material, he will present a more faith-based perspective on Bach on three Sunday afternoons in November. How did Bach understand the message of God’s Word, and how can his art speak into our daily life?
The first class on November 13 is titled "What is the very best time?" and draws on themes from Bach's intimate early masterpiece, Gottes Zeit ist der allerbeste Zeit, Cantata 106. November 20 we will investigate "The Devotional Voice,” brilliantly illustrated by the Pentecost Cantata 74, Wer mich liebet, der wird mein Wort halten (Whoever loves me will keep my Word.) And on November 27 we will enter into the season of Advent and "Wake up!" by studying Cantata 140, Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme, (Wake, awake, a voice is calling) on the very Sunday it was written for.
Mark your calendars for November 13, 20 and 27 at 4 pm, at Emmanuel Memorial Episcopal Church, 208 W University Ave., Champaign. These sessions are free and open to all, so bring a music-loving friend!
